In a landmark achievement for Federal Polytechnic Nekede, the institution has officially received its first-ever project from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), thanks to the efforts of its Rector, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Igbokwe.
According to a press statement from the Office of the Special Assistant to the Rector on Media Matters and made available to newsmen on Friday, indicates that the NDDC, on Thursday, March 27, 2025, formally handed over the site for a solar-powered streetlight installation to the project contractor, marking a significant step towards improved campus infrastructure and energy sustainability.
The handover ceremony, held on campus, underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructural development in the Niger Delta region.
Among the dignitaries present were Hon. Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu (NDDC Commissioner representing Imo State); Sir Kelechi Nwelue (NDDC Director for Imo State); Mr. Stephen Nwosu (Assistant Director & Head of the Project Team); and Hon. Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh (Chairman, Governing Council of the Polytechnic).
Dr. Mrs. Basilia Igbokwe was accompanied by her Management Team.
NDDC Pledges Commitment to Development
In his address, Hon. Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu reaffirmed the NDDC’s dedication to fostering growth in the Niger Delta through infrastructural projects and skill acquisition programs.
He stated that the Polytechnic’s inclusion in the Light Up Niger Delta initiative, championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would enhance campus security and visibility through the installation of 233 solar-powered streetlights.
He urged the Polytechnic community to support the contractors and stressed the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the project’s longevity.
Transparency and Quality Assurance in Execution
Hon. Uchegbu clarified that the contractor had not yet been financially mobilized by the NDDC, highlighting the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability. He assured stakeholders that the project would be executed to the highest standards within the stipulated timeframe.
Providing technical details, Mr. Stephen Nwosu, Head of the Project Team, stated that each of the 233 standing poles would be fitted with 100-watt bulbs. He emphasized that the NDDC would maintain full supervisory responsibility over the project and urged the Polytechnic community to offer support without interference.
Rector Expresses Gratitude, Calls for More Interventions
Dr. Mrs. Basilia Igbokwe expressed her deep appreciation to the NDDC for selecting Federal Polytechnic Nekede for the initiative. She lauded the commission’s swift approval and execution of the project and took the opportunity to advocate for additional interventions, particularly in the renovation and replacement of vandalized facilities.
She assured the NDDC of the Polytechnic’s full cooperation and urged the contractor to uphold the highest execution standards.
Governing Council Chairman Pledges Support
Hon. Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh, Chairman of the Governing Council, pledged the institution’s full support for the project team. He commended the Federal and Imo State Governments for their continued investment in educational infrastructure and expressed confidence in the project’s timely completion.
Contractor Vows Timely Delivery
A representative of Hirokashima, the project contractor, assured that the installation would be completed within three weeks, provided a secure and enabling environment is maintained. The contractor pledged strict adherence to specifications to ensure high-quality delivery.

Dr. Charles Obichere, the Polytechnic Librarian, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks to the NDDC Commissioner and his team, acknowledging their timely intervention in enhancing the Polytechnic’s infrastructural landscape.
