Rector’s Solar Revolution Powers Federal Polytechnic Nekede’s Future

The persistent hum of generators and the frustration of sudden power outages are rapidly becoming distant memories at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri. Under the vision of the Rector, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe,  the institution is undergoing a sweeping renewable energy transformation, placing practical education, administrative efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure at the forefront of its academic mission.
​Brightening the Byte: Computer Science Labs Go Solar
​In a major boost for hands-on technical training, the Department of Computer Science became the latest beneficiary of the ongoing campus-wide energy upgrade. On Friday, August 7, 2026, a fully functional solar power system was officially installed to serve two key computing facilities: the NDDC Lab (HND I Lab) and the American Embassy Lab (HND II Lab).
According to the Head of Department, Dr. S.A. Oladimeji, the intervention directly addresses the need for uninterrupted practical sessions in the computer laboratories. He noted that the Rector has assured the department that the remaining computer labs will be similarly equipped with solar systems in due course.
​A Campus-Wide Renewable Surge
The recent installation in the Computer Science department is part of a broader infrastructure strategy. Not long ago, the *School of Environmental Design Technology and the ICT Directorate* enjoyed similar solar installations, significantly boosting research capabilities and administrative operations.
​Building on this momentum, an aggressive solar installation project is currently underway across the institution’s three main administrative blocks. Work commenced at the *Registry Division* , driven by the Rector’s target to eliminate operational bottlenecks, boost productivity, and drastically accelerate the processing and issuance of student certificates and transcripts.
​Two Years of Impact: Grid Connectivity and Green Energy
​This solar initiative comes on the heels of another major utility milestone reported by the Rector’s Media Office: the successful connection of the institution to the Imo State Orashi electricity grid. The dual strategy of main grid integration alongside localized solar installations is creating an unprecedented era of power reliability across strategic units, schools, divisions, and directorates.
​As the current administration marks its two-year anniversary by *24th September, 2026* , this systematic overhaul of the institution’s energy landscape stands out as a defining achievement of an impactful tenure.
