The decision by Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham to publicly reject her reported inclusion in the Lagos State APC Campaign Council may have a deeper background than a simple case of mistaken identity.
While Abraham has not stated that the backlash she suffered after supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election was the reason for her latest decision, her experience since then provides an important context for understanding why she may now be reluctant to return to partisan politics.
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, Abraham reacted after her name appeared among members of the APC Lagos Campaign Council’s Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate. She promptly distanced herself from the structure, saying: “I’m not a member of any campaign council. I have said it recently. I am staying out of politics. Please disregard the supposed inclusion of my name in any campaign committee.”
Her response is particularly significant given what followed her open support for Tinubu during the 2023 election.
Abraham was one of the entertainers who openly backed Tinubu’s presidential bid. She attended his inauguration dinner in May 2023, despite facing criticism from some sections of the public over her political choice.
The backlash did not disappear after the election.
By 2024, reports documented repeated attacks against the actress on social media, with some followers criticising her whenever she posted online and blaming her for supporting a government they associated with worsening economic hardship. Punch reported that some social-media users even posted disturbing “RIP” messages about the actress.
The controversy became even more personal in 2024. Abraham publicly complained about the abuse she was receiving, including comments involving members of her family. In one emotional Instagram Live session, she spoke about people posting pictures of her children and directing abusive comments at them.
That experience may help explain the significance of her present position.
For a celebrity whose career depends heavily on a broad and diverse fan base, political identification can come with consequences beyond the ballot box. A public endorsement that wins admiration from one section of the audience can simultaneously alienate another.
Abraham’s experience illustrates that dilemma.
Her latest decision, therefore, could be viewed within the wider context of the price some celebrities pay when they move from entertainment into highly polarised partisan politics. Rather than risk another cycle of political controversy, criticism and personal attacks, Abraham now appears to be drawing a clear line between her entertainment career and active party politics.
However, it is important to distinguish what is established from what is inferred.
There is currently no public statement from Abraham saying that the 2023 backlash is the reason she rejected the APC campaign council appointment. Her stated reason is that she has chosen to stay out of politics.
The timing nevertheless makes the development noteworthy.
The actress was listed alongside prominent entertainers including Jide Kosoko, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Akintola, Adebayo Salami, Saheed Balogun, Bukky Wright, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Obesere and Adewale Ayuba in the APC’s Entertainment and Creative Economy Directorate.
Her immediate public rejection means that, at least for now, Abraham does not want her name associated with the campaign structure.
