The atmosphere at the front of the Rectory Building at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri (FPNO), erupted into joyous cheers on Monday, September 7, 2026, as the Polytechnic community gathered to spring a grand surprise birthday celebration for the institution’s 9th Substantive Rector, Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe.
As Dr. Igbokwe stepped out of her vehicle, she was greeted with a resounding chorus of “Surprise!”, surrounded by warm hugs, cheers, and heartfelt prayers from staff and well-wishers. A centerpiece of the gathering was a specially designed birthday cake reflecting her distinguished dual roles as a Brigadier and a Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a tribute symbolizing her unique blend of disciplined leadership, strength, and faith.
A Second Celebration at the Council Chamber
Following the initial outdoor tribute, the festivities continued on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Immediately after a Solemn Assembly organized to mark both the Rector’s birthday and her two-year milestone in office, selected friends and colleagues hosted a second birthday bash inside the Council Chamber of the Rectory Building.
The indoor event featured vibrant musical performances, cake cutting, and dancing. Key staff members and principal officers delivered remarks celebrating Dr. Igbokwe’s transformative “4Rs Agenda”, Rescue, Recover, Reconstruct, and Restore, which has driven significant progress in institutional facilities, staff development, and academic excellence over the past two years.
Dignitaries Honour the “Mother of Grace”
The Council Chamber reception also drew prominent external leaders who offered goodwill comments in honour of the Rector, including: Chief Austin Oyedebelu, Imo State APC Chairman, who attended alongside his wife; and Hon. Tochukwu Okere (Toska), House Member representing the Owerri Zonal Constituency.
Both special guests praised Dr. Igbokwe’s administrative vision, dedication to youth development, and visionary leadership. Beyond the festivities, the twin celebrations stood as a testament to a leader widely revered for her warmth, accessibility, and unwavering commitment to the Polytechnic community.
