The pupils and teachers who were abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity.
The development was disclosed on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his official X account.
According to Onanuga, the victims were rescued by security forces following sustained efforts by security agencies to secure their release.
He wrote: “Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been freed by their abductors. The kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by Security Forces.
“One of the rescued teachers in Oyo sends a thank you message to President Tinubu and the security agencies.”
The abduction had sparked widespread concern across Oyo State, with parents, community leaders and residents calling on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims unharmed.
The pupils and their teachers were kidnapped while travelling in Orire Local Government Area, prompting a coordinated security operation involving multiple agencies. Although authorities have yet to release full details of the rescue operation or disclose whether any suspects were arrested, the victims’ safe return has brought relief to their families and the wider community.
The successful rescue adds to recent efforts by security agencies to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country, as the Federal Government continues to assure Nigerians of its commitment to improving security and protecting lives and property.
