Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the party’s nationwide primary election.
Atiku secured a decisive victory after polling 1,846,370 votes to defeat former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who garnered 504,117 votes.
The result, announced after the collation of votes across the country, officially positions Atiku as ADC’s flagbearer for the forthcoming general election.
Addressing party members and supporters after his victory, Atiku expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him, describing the nomination as a great honour and responsibility.
He praised the ADC for conducting what he called a free, fair and transparent primary, noting that the process reflects the party’s commitment to internal democracy at a time when democratic values are being tested in Nigeria.
Atiku said the ADC coalition was built on sacrifice, compromise and a shared determination to protect Nigeria’s democracy and provide an alternative leadership for the country.
He called on party members to remain united after the primary, stressing that the contest was not about winners and losers but about building a stronger movement capable of winning the next general election.
According to him, with the primary now concluded, attention must shift to the larger national task of campaigning across the country and presenting Nigerians with a credible alternative ahead of the polls.
He also commended fellow aspirants, party leaders, stakeholders, volunteers and members for their role in ensuring a peaceful and successful primary exercise.
Atiku urged ADC supporters nationwide to close ranks and begin the hard work of mobilising for victory, saying the party is determined to offer leadership that will address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges while strengthening democratic governance.
