Iyaloja General of Oyo state, Alhaja Sarata Aduke Konibaje has highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to Nigeria’s food crisis, highlighting both the immediate security concerns and the broader economic policies affecting food availability and affordability.
The Iyaloja General of Oyo, voiced her deep concerns over the escalating food crisis in Nigeria during an interview with WesternLifeNewsNG at her residence in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
She specifically pinpointed on the security challenges as a significant factor contributing to the crisis, noting that many farmers are now reluctant to cultivate large tracts of land due to fears for their safety.
While commending Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his proactive measures, such as providing seeds to farmers and subsidising fertilizer, Alhaja Konibaje stressed the need for the government to intensify its efforts to combat banditry.
“The security issue is causing the food crisis as many farmers who used to plant on large lands, which are far from town, have refused to go there for fear of their lives,” she stated.
Alhaja Konibaje also advocated for the importation of food items to foster competition and reduce prices, making them more affordable for the general populace.
“Allowing the importation of food items will help bring down prices and make food more accessible to everyone,” she suggested.
Moreover, she raised alarm over the activities of individuals in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo North, who are allegedly exporting cassava to neighboring countries despite local shortages.
“What kind of wickedness is this, for some people to be exporting commodities which are not enough for us to eat to another country,” she expressed with visible frustration.
In a passionate plea, the Iyaloja General urged Governor Makinde to launch an investigation into these activities and take swift action against those responsible.
“The government must investigate these enemies of the people and halt their detrimental activities,” she insisted.
