For decades, the standard path through higher education in Nigeria followed a predictable, almost rigid rhythm: study hard, pass examinations, collect a diploma, and step out into the daunting, hyper-competitive job market hoping for the best. Today, however, that narrative is undergoing a seismic shift at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri (FPNO).

When the institution officially launched the Year 2025 TETFund Career Service Centre Intervention Programme on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, it signalled more than just a routine ribbon-cutting ceremony Under the visionary leadership of the Rector, Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe, and coordinated by the Director of Career Development Services, Dr. (Mrs.) Ijeoma O. Emeagi, FPNO unveiled a state-of-the-art career hub. Armed with smart interactive boards, dedicated internet connectivity, and specialized computer-based testing corners, the Centre was built to bridge the longstanding divide between classroom theory and real-world employer expectations.

Fast-forward to Friday, September 18, 2026: the atmosphere at the Career Service Centre was charged with accomplishment as the institution marked the Grand Finale and completion of the programme’s inaugural 1st Cohort Hundreds of participating students and institutional staff gathered to receive their official Career Development Training Certificates, celebrating a two-week transition from academic routine to market readiness.

Inside the Training: Building Digital Muscle and Workplace Competence
The intensive intervention stream for students focused on building practical, high-impact workplace skills. Third-year and final-year students underwent rigorous practical training covering:

Digital & Professional Visibility: Optimizing LinkedIn profiles, digital job search tactics, personal branding, and cold emailing strategies.

Workplace Preparedness: Comprehensive CV and cover letter drafting, employer simulations, mock interviews, workplace ethics, and professional communication.

Adaptability & Well-being: Guidance on navigating AI and automation in modern industries, alongside targeted modules on drug abuse prevention to protect academic and professional futures.

Beyond the general curriculum, students and staff leveraged the facility’s online corners to sit for international assessments. A significant highlight was the recognition of participants who earned global industry credentials from platforms such as Huawei and Cisco.

Staff Capacity and AI Readiness
Recognizing that student guidance is only as strong as the mentors behind it, a dedicated 5-day capacity-building stream was conducted for Career Services staff, newly employed personnel, and Departmental Career Representatives.

Facilitated by seasoned resource persons in labour market intelligence and guidance counselling, a standout focus was Ethical Prompt Engineering for Productivity. Staff were trained on leveraging Artificial Intelligence responsibly to streamline office workflows, conduct labour analytics, and enhance career reporting while maintaining strict standards of confidentiality, accuracy, and human judgment.

Key Execution Partners & Strategic Facilitators
The seamless execution of this multi-stream intervention was driven by TETFund-approved third-party service providers alongside key regulatory and industry partners:

Student Training Stream Contractor: HolyWalk Contacts Nigeria Ltd., who facilitated the student employability and career-readiness modules.

Staff Training Stream Contractor: THAMA / TiSNL, who handled the 5-day staff capacity building and administrative strategy sessions.

Data Privacy & Industry Orientation: The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) engaged graduating students on data rights, privacy compliance under the NDPA 2023, and emerging career opportunities in the digital data economy. Key sessions were delivered by NDPC resource persons, including Obaji Lynda (Legal Officer, NDPC) and Agboola Oluwatimilehin (Assistant Manager, Research & Development, NDPC).

Institutional Support Units: The Polytechnic’s Student Affairs Division, Guidance & Counselling Unit, and the FPNO Alumni Body.

Institutionalizing the Transition: A Lasting Legacy
Speaking on the impact of the initiative, the Deputy Director of Career Development Services, Engr. Gaven Dipnap Vennim noted that the real measure of the project lies in how participants apply their new competencies with integrity and excellence in the workforce.

To solidify this mandate, the Directorate has proposed institutionalizing Career Employability and Graduate Transition Preparation as a compulsory zero-unit or one-unit course for all final-year students. Rector Dr. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe has reaffirmed Management’s commitment to implementing this academic framework through the institution’s governing organs.

As certificates were handed out and networking sessions concluded, Federal Polytechnic Nekede reaffirmed its position as a forward-thinking polytechnic, producing graduates who do not merely join the job market, but actively lead and solve problems within it.
