The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has revealed that its discussions with former presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections broke down over disagreements surrounding the party’s presidential ticket.

Speaking during a Hausa political programme aired on DITV Kaduna, PRP National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said both politicians expressed interest in joining the party, and early talks initially showed promise.

According to him, discussions had advanced to the point where a committee was expected to continue negotiations.

However, the talks reportedly collapsed after disagreements emerged over conditions allegedly presented by the two politicians before formally joining the PRP.

Baba-Ahmed claimed that Obi and Kwankwaso sought assurances regarding the party’s presidential ticket as part of the negotiations. He stated that the PRP leadership rejected the idea, insisting that no individual could be guaranteed automatic candidacy without going through the party’s internal democratic process.

According to the PRP chairman, the party made it clear that anyone seeking elective office under its platform must first become a registered member and subsequently contest through established procedures.

He stressed that the PRP would not abandon its internal democratic principles to accommodate political heavyweights, adding that genuine popularity and political strength should be tested through open competition within the party rather than through pre-arranged agreements.
