A powerful coalition of political heavyweights is set to meet in Abuja on Sunday to lay the groundwork for a united opposition front against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting will bring together key figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex-governors Kayode Fayemi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, Ibrahim Shekerau, and former Senate President David Mark.
Sources say the agenda includes selecting state coordinators and deciding on whether to form or adopt a political party capable of challenging the ruling APC.
Also expected is the formal integration of smaller parties and aggrieved APC allies into the emerging movement, driven by growing discontent over economic hardship, insecurity, and internal party tensions.
“This coalition is about giving Nigerians a credible alternative and ensuring the 2027 election is truly free and fair,” an insider said.
The League of Northern Democrats, led by Shekerau, has already pledged support, while El-Rufai has publicly committed to the effort, stating at a recent event in Katsina that the aim is to “send Tinubu back to Lagos.”
Sunday’s meeting is widely seen as the first major step in reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
