A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Abdullahi, has claimed that defections in Nigerian politics are often driven by corrupt politicians seeking refuge from prosecution.
Speaking in Abuja, Abdullahi said many elected officials and appointees, whom he described as opportunists, defect to ruling parties to avoid accountability for their misconduct.
He stressed that political cross-carpeting is inevitable in Nigeria due to the self-serving nature of most politicians.
“They run from one party to another, not for ideology, but for personal safety,” he said, adding that such behavior stems from weak political values and systemic manipulation.
Despite the trend, Abdullahi dismissed concerns about Nigeria drifting into a one-party state, arguing that defectors often prove unreliable and betray their new parties.
