Former Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes could be on the verge of an emotional return to Old Trafford, four years after leaving the club.
Now 24, the England U21 international is reportedly a target for new United manager Ruben Amorim, following a stellar spell in France with Lille and a productive loan stint at Boavista.
Gomes, whose contract with Lille expires at the end of the season, is expected to be available for a modest fee. Reports suggest Amorim sees the creative midfielder as a cost-effective addition to his squad as he rebuilds the team.
Reflecting on his departure from Manchester United in 2020, Gomes previously shared how harsh treatment from then-manager Jose Mourinho contributed to his exit.
Speaking about an incident during his youth career, Gomes revealed, “He didn’t think I had played up to standard in a reserves match to warrant a place in the first-team squad, and he let me know in front of everyone. At the time, it felt like a public humiliation, but I later understood it was his way of pushing me to improve.”
The London-born playmaker admitted the experience was emotionally taxing, but it ultimately shaped his career.
“It was the most difficult period of my career. I was at the club my whole life and felt there wasn’t a clear plan for me to progress. That was the hardest pill to swallow,” he added.
Despite his challenging exit, Gomes has flourished abroad, delivering standout performances in both Portugal and France. His development has caught the attention of Amorim, whose tactical vision could offer Gomes the platform to reignite his career at Manchester United.
A return to Old Trafford would not only be a professional milestone for Gomes but also a chance to rewrite the narrative of his career with the club that shaped him.
