Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has raised an alarm over intelligence reports that Comrade Philip Shaibu, the recently reinstated Deputy Governor, is planning an unauthorised takeover of the Government House.
The reported scheme, which is allegedly set to unfold on Monday, September 30, is aimed at forcing his reinstatement despite an ongoing legal appeal.
Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to the Edo State Government, released a statement late Saturday, calling for urgent intervention from the Inspector General of Police and the public to prevent Shaibu from executing what he described as a “dangerous plot.”
Osagie warned that the plan could lead to severe disruptions in public order and potentially incite violence.
Referencing a prior incident where Shaibu’s attempt to access the Government House resulted in the tragic death of a police officer, Osagie stressed the risks involved.
“We urge the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly to prevent this unlawful invasion. The last time such an attempt was made, a life was lost, and we cannot afford a repeat of that tragedy,” Osagie stated.
He further emphasised that legal processes are still underway, and Shaibu’s bid to forcefully occupy the Government House is premature. According to Osagie, a stay of execution on the ruling reinstating Shaibu is still being processed at the Court of Appeal.
The Edo State Government has officially notified the Inspector General of Police and other authorities, urging them to maintain peace until the final determination of the appeal. Osagie expressed concerns that Shaibu’s actions could cause widespread chaos in Benin City and across the state if unchecked.
“The Court of Appeal needs to carefully consider the situation and prevent any escalation of tension,” Osagie noted, adding that allowing Shaibu’s unilateral move could jeopardize the safety and stability of the state.
