Dr. Basilia Nkem Igbokwe, the long-anticipated 9th Substantive Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, was officially inaugurated in a grand ceremony held at the institution’s 1000-capacity auditorium on September 24, 2024.
The event drew dignitaries from across the state, including Imo State Deputy Governor, Barr. Mrs. Chinyere Ekomaro, members of the polytechnic’s Governing Council, and representatives from corporate organizations, staff, students, and the press.
Dr. Igbokwe’s entrance was marked by a celebratory roadshow, where she was greeted with excitement and triumph from Naze Junction to the institution.
Her inauguration speech outlined an ambitious 11-point agenda, promising to revitalize the polytechnic through a commitment to justice, fairness, and accountability. Key points included staff welfare, environmental cleanliness, and the revival of revenue-generating projects, such as the institution’s bread factory and tissue paper outfit.
The Rector also emphasised the importance of maintaining strong ties with the polytechnic’s host community and pledged a holistic review of student fees. She warned against lateness, absenteeism, and indiscipline among staff, stressing the need for collective effort to restore the polytechnic’s glory.
In her address, Dr. Igbokwe vowed to steer the institution away from corruption and impunity, urging the community to support her vision for a renewed and thriving academic environment.
Representing Governor Hope Uzodimma, Deputy Governor Barr. Ekomaro congratulated the polytechnic community on their choice of leadership, commending Dr. Igbokwe for her commitment to change. She affirmed that the institution would experience holistic transformation under her leadership.
The event was filled with goodwill messages from staff, students, and stakeholders, who expressed confidence in Dr. Igbokwe’s ability to lead the institution into a new era of excellence.
