The Yoruba Patriots Movement (YPM ), a group of mainstream of distinguished Yoruba Elders, has expressed dismay at the recent demand by a self determination group, calling for the secession of Yoruba nation from Nigeria.
The group in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Barrister (Hon.) Oladosu Oladipo (GCCF), and made available to journalists on Wednesday, described the demand as ill-conceived, ill-timed and untenable.
Barr. Oladipo added that such demand at this time, a Yoruba personality is at the helm of affairs of Nigeria sounds ridiculous and superficial.
YPM in the statement said it was surprised at the action of “some hungry elements in the southwest” which on 1st of December 2023 demonstrated and demanded for the seceesion of the Yoruba from the Commonwealth of Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We vehemently oppose the action and roundly condemn it on all shapes and forms. The action is not only ill-motivated but also ill-timed because they applied superficial situations which are very far from well-thought-out, far-reaching reasons based on the reasonable deference to the stalk reality of the constitutional provisions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read in part.
The statement added, “the grund norm for any rational decision to separate from the other federating units in Nigeria must be predicated on the path of constitutionality. Anything else is mere deceit to extort hard foreign currency from innocent but patriotic Odu’a sons and daughters in the diaspora, that are tired of the hitherto situation, whereby our Yoruba race had been relegated to the background, over time, sadly to the third class citizen in Nigeria by some Fulani cabals within the Federal Republic of Nigeria .
“Probably, the urge to changing the political and economic landscapes in Nigeria prompted this propaganda of these hungry elements of Oduduwa spies to using the emotional feelings to stampede the right-thinking majority Yoruba Patriots from following their thoughtless action of yesterday,” the statement concluded.
