The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), held its 54th Convocation Ceremony in grand style from Friday, July 25 to Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Margaret Ekpo Convocation Arena.
In a statement by Noble Uchegbu Uchechukwu Zachariah, the association’s National Publicity Secretary, the colourful event featured the conferment of degrees and honorary doctorate awards, further reinforcing the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, national development, and alumni pride.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the conferment of a Doctor of Public Administration (Honoris Causa) on Chief Barrister Andrew Oru. A seasoned legal practitioner, public servant, and humanitarian, Chief Oru was honoured for his exceptional contributions to the legal profession, governance, and philanthropic efforts across Nigeria.
In his acceptance speech, he expressed profound gratitude to the university and dedicated the honour to the ideals of justice, compassion, and patriotic service.
The event also saw an impressive show of solidarity from the University of Nigeria Alumni Association (UNAA), with members from across the country in attendance. Clad in ceremonial uniforms and led in song by the vibrant UNAA Identity Anthem, the alumni made a strong impression on the convocation arena.
Leading the charge was UNAA’s National/Global President, Queen (Mrs.) Linda Ugochi Agua-Onyekwelu, whose leadership and coordination ensured a large and well-organized turnout of delegates. Her efforts were widely applauded as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Lion family.
The ceremony also served to resolve a recent leadership controversy within the alumni body.
Attempts by Mrs. Doris Okoroh to impersonate the UNAA presidency were publicly addressed during the event, with university authorities revoking the regalia she had worn under false pretence. Her claim to the presidency was officially discredited, affirming Queen Linda Agua-Onyekwelu as the recognized national leader of UNAA.
Following the ceremony, Chief Oru hosted a well-attended reception at the Great Majesty Hotel, Nsukka.
The event brought together alumni, dignitaries, and friends, who enjoyed fine dining, quality entertainment, and thoughtful souvenirs, including custom-branded power banks gifted by Chief Oru.
Festivities continued later at Jucony Hotel, where UNAA delegates and other guests enjoyed a relaxed evening of drinks, storytelling, laughter, and camaraderie—rounding off the convocation weekend on a celebratory note.
In his official convocation address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Oguejiofo T. Ujam congratulated the graduates and honourees, urging them to carry forward the values of the university and serve as worthy ambassadors.
The Pro-Chancellor, Engr. Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, presided over the convocation with elegance and poise.
With the presence of top dignitaries, traditional rulers, government officials, and international guests, the 54th Convocation of the University of Nigeria will be remembered for its splendor, unity, and reaffirmation of the Lion legacy.
