UNN Alumni Association (Owerri Branch) Pays Courtesy Visit To Federal Polytechnic Nekede Rector

The Owerri Branch of the University of Nigeria Alumni Association (UNAA) paid a courtesy visit on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, to the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe.

The Rector, a distinguished alumna of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), warmly received the delegation in her office, accompanied by the institution’s Registrar, Mr. Stanley Ugochukwu Njoku.

Leading the delegation was Professor Aloysius Ukachukwu Awuzie, former Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University and past National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who stood in for the Branch President, Mr. Louis Alozie. Prof. Awuzie conveyed the President’s regrets over his absence due to a delayed flight.

Speaking on behalf of the Association, Prof. Awuzie praised the Rector for her outstanding achievements within a short period in office, describing her success as a natural reflection of her pedigree as a true “Lioness.” He conveyed the Association’s pride in her leadership and pledged continued prayers and support.

He also briefed the Rector on the branch’s monthly meeting schedule and extended an invitation for her to attend future gatherings.

Highlighting the planned construction of the UNAA Alumni Centre, set to commence in September 2025, he appealed for her support both in human and material capacities. Prof. Awuzie encouraged the Rector to leverage the Association’s extensive network in furthering the vision and mission of the Polytechnic.

The delegation expressed particular delight over the appointment of Noble Uchegbu Zach, a fellow alumnus and current Branch and National Publicity Secretary of UNAA, as Special Assistant to the Rector on Media Matters.

Reaffirming the Association’s motto, “To Restore the Dignity of Man,” Prof. Awuzie appealed to the Rector to consider offering employment opportunities to young UNN graduates Lions and Lionesses as a way of promoting the image of their alma mater. He reiterated UNAA’s readiness to provide guidance, partnership, and institutional support throughout her tenure.

In her response, Dr. (Mrs.) Igbokwe apologized for her delayed arrival due to official duties and warmly welcomed the delegation. She fondly recalled her active participation in UNAA activities in the past, underscoring the importance of alumni associations in fostering community, mentorship, and collaboration.

The Rector applauded the Association’s commitment to strengthening alumni ties and promoting the ideals of their alma mater. She pledged to remain actively involved and expressed interest in attending future meetings, schedule permitting.

Furthermore, she promised to engage other Chief Executives of tertiary institutions in Imo State who are UNN alumni to encourage their involvement and support for the Association.

Dr. Igbokwe reaffirmed her commitment to mentoring and empowering younger Lions and Lionesses and pledged close collaboration with the UNAA Owerri Branch.

She encouraged the delegation to maintain open lines of communication and assured them of her dedication to making her alma mater proud through exemplary leadership. She concluded by expressing heartfelt appreciation for their visit and kind prayers.

Members of the UNAA visiting delegation included: Surv. Clement Nwabichie; Prof. Steve Onyeagocha; Pastor Sam Atulegwu (Branch Secretary); Dame Jane Echefu; Hon. James Okere; Ugoeze Ogechi Chuka-Okonkwo; and Dr. (Mrs.) Pat Ekennia.

Others were, Mr. Stephenson O. Umezurike-Songito; Mazi Okey Njoku; Mr. Ugochukwu Onye and Dr. Peter Ozims

This significant visit underscores the vital role of alumni engagement as a catalyst for institutional development.

The Rector’s Media Office urges members of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Alumni Association to align with the vision and leadership of Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Igbokwe and extend their support toward advancing the Polytechnic’s progress.
