The Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to introduce a major reform in the education sector by scrapping the existing junior and senior secondary school system.

The new model, a 12-year uninterrupted basic education system, will replace the current structure.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Thursday at the 2025 National Council on Education (NCE) extraordinary meeting in Abuja, which was attended by education commissioners from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and key stakeholders.

Under the present 6-3-3-4 system, students spend six years in primary school, three in junior secondary, three in senior secondary, and four in university.

The proposed 12-4 model will merge junior and senior secondary schooling into a single, continuous 12-year basic education program before students proceed to higher institutions.

The government says the reform aims to reduce dropout rates by eliminating financial and systemic barriers and ensuring students complete secondary education before age 16, which will become the new minimum university entry age.
