The Imperative Of Peaceful Protest And Government Responsibility / By Babs-Oluribigbe Adeoye

As Nigeria braces for the nationwide #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest scheduled from August 1 to 10, it is crucial to reflect on the underlying causes driving citizens to the streets.

Since the advent of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, there has been a palpable sense of disillusionment among Nigerians. Expectations of improved welfare and governance have not been met, and many believe that conditions have worsened.

The government’s tendency to attribute its shortcomings to the previous administration has done little to assuage public frustration. While it is undeniable that the Tinubu administration inherited a challenging economic landscape, the blame game does not address the immediate needs of the people. Citizens are yearning for tangible improvements in their daily lives, not excuses.

However, it is equally important for citizens to appreciate the complexities of economic recovery. A mere fourteen months is insufficient to reverse the damage of years of economic mismanagement.

Patience and understanding are required as the administration works towards long-term solutions. Constructive dialogue and realistic expectations are vital during this transitional period.

Acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to protest, it is imperative that such demonstrations remain peaceful. Violence and destruction undermine the very cause for which the protest is being held. A peaceful protest is not only a demonstration of civic responsibility but also a powerful statement that demands respect and attention.

The government has a crucial role in ensuring the security and safety of the protesters. Adequate measures must be in place to protect demonstrators and prevent any escalation into violence. Furthermore, the federal government must refrain from sponsoring counter-protests, as this would only exacerbate tensions and could lead to unnecessary confrontations.

We appeal to the protesters to conduct their demonstrations without coercion. No citizen should be threatened or forced to join the protests against their will. Unity in purpose, respect for differing opinions, and adherence to peaceful methods are essential for the protest to achieve its objectives.

In conclusion, the #EndBadGovernment protest is a significant moment for both the government and the citizens of Nigeria. It is a test of the government’s commitment to democratic principles and the citizens’ dedication to constructive engagement.

Let us strive for a future where dialogue and mutual respect guide our actions, ensuring a better Nigeria for all.
