The Spanish government has called for a formal investigation into Barcelona star Lamine Yamal’s recent 18th birthday celebration following widespread backlash over alleged exploitation of individuals with dwarfism and the objectification of women.
The footballer, who marked his milestone birthday on July 13 with a lavish, mafia-themed party attended by about 200 guests including friends, family, and teammates, is now at the centre of a growing controversy.
According to reports from Spanish outlet Marca, social media influencer Claudia Calvo claimed that the young footballer paid to have 12 women with specific breast measurements attend the party. It was also alleged that individuals with dwarfism were hired as entertainment during the celebration.
In response, the Association of People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE) condemned the incident, threatening legal and social action.
“These actions violate not only current legislation but also the ethical values of a society striving for equality and respect,” the organisation said in a statement.
The Spanish Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disabilities also backed the ADEE’s stance, calling for accountability and legal redress.
Jesús Martín, General Director of Disability for the Spanish Government, expressed concern over the message such events send to the public, particularly to young fans. “We are concerned that people with money and power feel above the law. The law must be applied equally to everyone — both the powerful and the humble,” he said.
If found in violation of relevant laws, Yamal could face a fine of up to £867,000. The government is urging relevant ministries to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
