Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has firmly denied ever accepting bribes from contractors or misappropriating local government funds during his tenure.
Speaking at a news briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Shekarau reiterated his commitment to moral integrity throughout his eight years in office.
Addressing the media during the event, which was organised to announce the 70th anniversary of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Shekarau reflected on his governance and the principles that guided him.
“In my government, I never touched local government funds. I am one of the few governors who can proudly say that, for eight years, I did not misappropriate a single kobo from the local government money. Furthermore, in my 44 years of public service, I have never negotiated with any contractor or taken money from them,” Shekarau declared.
The former governor, who now serves as the Deputy Chairman of the MSSN Board of Trustees, added that his simple lifestyle is a testament to his integrity.
“The only property I own is my house in Kano, and I continue to live in a rented house in Abuja,” he stated.
Shekarau also spoke on the broader mission of the MSSN, highlighting the organization’s efforts to strengthen the Muslim community educationally, economically, spiritually, and politically.
With 37,000 branches across Nigeria, the MSSN aims to introduce new programs that promote unity, brotherhood, and active participation in governance.
Reflecting on the challenges the MSSN has faced, Shekarau noted that the organization struggled for over a decade to secure land for a national headquarters in Abuja.
He expressed pride in the society’s recent achievement of establishing a mosque in Gwarinpa, which served as the venue for the press conference.
Founded in 1954, the MSSN was created to foster unity among Muslims, instill the true Islamic spirit of brotherhood, and promote absolute faith in Allah as the foundation for achieving peace among humanity.
