Sheikh Gumi Urges Postponement Of Nationwide Protest To Avoid Anarchy

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric based in Kaduna, has called for the postponement of a planned nationwide protest in Nigeria, citing concerns that it could lead to widespread anarchy.

He acknowledged the severe impact of corruption across all sectors of Nigerian society, saying almost no institution is free from this scourge.

Despite the pervasive corruption, Gumi sees the youth’s move to protest as a hopeful sign for the country’s future.

Gumi, in a statement on his official Facebook page, expressed his admiration for the youth’s initiative to stand against bad governance and poor leadership.

However, he cautioned that the timing of the protest could be detrimental, potentially sparking anarchy.

Gumi highlighted the widespread corruption affecting various sectors, including the executive, legislature, academia, judiciary, armed forces, labor unions, and wealthy citizens, all focused on amassing wealth while the nation drifts toward hunger and lawlessness.

He pointed out that the youth have emerged as the last hope for the nation amid this crisis.

Despite his support for the youth’s cause, Gumi urged them to postpone the protest planned for August, suggesting January 1st of the following year as a more suitable date.

He argued that postponement would allow for better coordination and organisation, ensuring that their demands are well-articulated for the nation’s benefit.

Gumi warned that any premature action could lead to greater turmoil, noting that not everyone shares the youth’s noble ambitions.

He stressed the importance of avoiding actions that could provide an opportunity for those who wish to divide the country.

The cleric’s call for postponement comes amidst as severe economic challenges, including high inflation and soaring food prices.
