The The Russian government, via its embassy in Nigeria, has affirmed that Nigerians have the right to protest, while stressing that Moscow has no intention of interfering in Nigeria’s governance.
This clarification comes after #EndBadGovernance protesters were seen displaying Russian flags during their demonstrations.
In a statement released on Monday, the Russian Embassy in Nigeria acknowledged media reports and social media content showing protesters in northern Nigerian states carrying Russian flags and chanting slogans in support of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The Government of the Russian Federation, as well as any Russian officials, are not involved in these activities and do not coordinate them in any way,” the Embassy stated.
Viral videos circulating on social media depict hundreds of protesters in various northern states brandishing Russian flags and shouting pro-Kremlin slogans.
The display of Russian symbols has ignited a widespread debate among Nigerians on social media.
Many are concerned about the implications of these symbols, given the allegations of Russian political interference in West African nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
These countries, which border northern Nigeria, have recently experienced military coups and have formed strong alliances with Moscow.
“We reiterate that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. The presence of Russian flags among some protesters is a personal choice and does not represent any official stance or policy of the Russian government,” the statement stated.
“We respect Nigerian democracy and uphold the right to peaceful demonstrations in accordance with Nigerian law. However, any resulting disruptions or acts of violence are strictly condemned,” the Russian government concluded.
