The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.
In a notice issued on Monday, the lawmakers cited violations of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), specifically accusing Fubara of reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds, contrary to Sections 120, 121(1)(2), and 122. Odu was accused of similar financial infractions.
The impeachment process, spearheaded by Speaker Martin Amaewhule and lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, follows a resolution passed by the assembly.
The lawmakers directed the clerk to publish the allegations in at least three national newspapers, in compliance with constitutional requirements.
This development marks the latest escalation in the ongoing power struggle between Fubara and pro-Wike lawmakers.
It comes just days after Fubara expressed his readiness to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill. His initial attempt to present the budget last Wednesday was met with resistance, as he and his entourage were allegedly locked out of the assembly complex.
The lawmakers later claimed they received Fubara’s letter requesting to present the budget after their plenary session and that the March 11 date on the letter did not allow sufficient time to process his request.
