The Federal Polytechnic Nekede (FedPolyNek) community came together in a spirited display of fitness and unity as Rector Dr. Basilia N. Igbokwe led the institution’s inaugural Walkathon to mark International Women’s Day.
The event, organized by the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri Women Association (FEPNOWA) in collaboration with the Sports Directorate, saw staff members embark on a 2.5-kilometer walk, reinforcing the importance of physical activity for overall well-being.
Addressing participants before the walk, Dr. Igbokwe emphasized the immense benefits of regular exercise, urging staff to adopt a daily walking routine of at least 30 minutes. She described walking as the simplest yet most effective form of exercise for long-term health and vitality.
Throughout the campus trek, participants radiated enthusiasm, with the Polytechnic Orator, Dr. Anayo Uhiara, commending the Rector’s dedication to workplace wellness.
He highlighted the Walkathon as an exemplary healthy workplace initiative, fostering team spirit and productivity.
The event concluded with a Fruit Party provided by FEPNOWA, underscoring the commitment to a holistic healthy lifestyle.
FEPNOWA President, Mrs. Ijeoma Odoemena, expressed gratitude for Dr. Igbokwe’s unwavering support for women-focused initiatives, praising her open-door leadership style. She also acknowledged the participation of male staff, emphasizing their role as supportive leaders.
Sports Director Dr. Simon C. Onyenwenjo extended appreciation to all participants, while Dr. Igbokwe encouraged staff to embrace regular physical activities to prevent lifestyle-related ailments like arthritis.
