The presidency has debunked widespread speculation suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement posted on Monday via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, dismissed the reports as false and unfounded.

“The story trending across media platforms to the effect that Mr President @officialABAT has either sacked the INEC chairman or has replaced the INEC chairman is not true and should be discountenanced,” Bwala wrote.

“Decisions and official acts of Mr President are communicated through official channels, not the rumour mill.”

Echoing the same position, O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, also urged the public to ignore the misinformation.

He stated that any official change in the electoral commission’s leadership would be properly announced.

“The Nigerian public should disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC chairman,” Ogra said.

“Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other appropriate official source.”

The clarification comes amid growing social media speculation and false reports suggesting a shake-up at INEC.
