Security operatives have sealed off the Plateau State House of Assembly complex’s entrance as the speakership’s tussle deepens.
At least 15 security vehicles were stationed strategically around the complex.
Stern-looking police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives, and other security personnel manned the gates and surrounding.
The road linking the Terminus Market from the Plateau Specialist Hospital through the assembly complex was blocked from traffic.
The Plateau police spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, said the move was to forestall any breakdown of law of order around the assembly.
”We learnt that supporters of some politicians will be coming around the assembly to protest. If the politicians’ supporters come around, it is going to affect traffic, and it may lead to the breakdown of law and order,” stated Mr Alabo. “If nothing happens, the security will be relaxed, and everything will return to normal.”
On Monday, the Plateau State High Court reinstated Mr Ayuba as the assembly’s speaker. The assembly impeached Mr Ayuba on October 28, 2021.
He had challenged his impeachment, which he described as illegal, as it contravened the assembly rules.
He resumed duties on Tuesday and presided over the plenary.
But Mr Ayuba’s successor, Yakubu Sanda and 12 others filed an appeal and stay of execution on Tuesday.
Messrs Sanda and Ayuba are laying claim to the speakership of the assembly.
While Mr Ayuba is relying on his reinstatement, Mr Sanda is holding onto the stay of execution.
