Peter Obi Supports Constitutional Right To Protest Amidst Economic Crisis

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, says the right to protest is protected by the Nigerian Constitution.

He made this statement in light of the planned nationwide protests by Nigerian youths scheduled for August 1-10, addressing the current economic hardships.

During an interview with Channels TV following his visit to Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Sunday, the former Governor of Anambra State encouraged protesters to remain lawful and civil.

Obi highlighted that the driving forces behind the August protests are widespread hunger and hopelessness.

He stated, “Protest is allowed within the Nigerian Constitution. I urge all those protesting to do so within the law and in a manner that reflects our adherence to legal norms.”

Acknowledging the nation’s struggles, Obi added, “The true sponsors of the protests are hunger and hopelessness among the youths. It’s essential to listen to the grievances of Nigerians.”

Furthermore, Obi called on security agencies to handle the protests lawfully and without excessive force.

“Security agencies should manage the situation within legal boundaries. Protests are a global phenomenon. It’s crucial to understand the reasons behind the protests, engage with the demonstrators, and address their concerns—that’s what governance is about,” he noted.
