In a move aimed at encouraging academic excellence and countering the growing perception that “education is a scam,” an alumnus of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute, Oyo, Mr. Babatunde Tijani (popularly known as TJ), has donated N1 million in cash awards to outstanding students and staff of the school.
The gesture was made during the school’s 44th Valedictory Service and Prize-Giving Day, where Tijani, represented by his sister, Ms. Omobola Tijani, served as Special Guest of Honour.
The cash prizes of N200,000 each were awarded to the best graduating students in Science, Arts, and Commerce, as well as the overall best graduating student. Another N200,000 was presented to the school staff in appreciation of their efforts in shaping future leaders.
“In memory of my late father, Chief Abdul-Lateef Eyitayo Tijani, who served as vice principal of this institution from 1981 to 1988, and as my humble contribution, I am delighted to present these awards,” Tijani said.
Encouraging the graduating class, he charged them to remain focused and resilient in their academic and life pursuits. “Stay curious, be patriotic, and pursue your passions with purpose. The sky is only your starting point,” he said.
Tijani also paid tribute to his former teachers, acknowledging their lasting impact on his development.
This is not the first time the alumnus is giving back to his alma mater. In recent years, he has donated several multimillion-naira projects including the renovation of a block of six classrooms, provision of 240 modern tables and desks, installation of a modern borehole, and refurbishment of the school mosque. He also sponsors the TJ BAB’S House at the school’s annual inter-house sports competition.
Principal of the school, Mr. Razak Raheem, in his address, commended Tijani’s consistent support for the school’s development, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and student welfare.
“His generosity has always been a pillar for this institution. We feel his impact at every important moment in the school’s calendar,” Raheem said, praying for continued blessings in Tijani’s endeavours.
He also praised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for creating an enabling environment for educators across the state. Raheem advised the graduating students to remain focused, avoid social vices, and aim for higher education.
“Secondary school is just the beginning. Let tertiary education be your next target. Stay away from drug abuse, prostitution, and cybercrime. Be good ambassadors of this great school,” he urged.
The highlight of the event was the announcement of Memunat Oyetunde as the overall best graduating student and best science student, earning her a total of N400,000. Faizat Oparemi emerged best in the commercial class, while Jewel Olaoba was named best arts student, each receiving N200,000.
In her acceptance speech, Oyetunde expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and described the award as a major motivation to strive for even greater achievements.
