Nigerian Foremost Constitutional Lawyer, Ben Nwabueze Dies

Ben Nwabueze, Nigeria’s prominent constitutional law professor, has been reportedly dead.

The nongenarian was said to have passed on at the age of 92 on Monday in Lagos after a protracted illness.

Mr Akabueze was a one-time secretary general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the socio-political group that seeks to advance the interest of Nigeriaā€™s Igbo ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

He earned his doctorate in law from the University of London in 1978.

Mr Nwabuezeā€™s work as a legal scholar transcended the Nigerian shores for decades, receiving recognition from several Western institutions, including Stanford University.

He did his undergraduate degree in political science at the institutionā€™s African and Oriental Studies Department in 1961.

For years, he was a senior faculty at Holborn College of Law, London, and the University of Nigeria Nsukka, as well as the university in Lusaka, Zambia.

He also published several books and papers on constitutional law, including on the militaryā€™s intervention in the political affairs of Nigeria and other African countries. between the 1980s and 1990s.
