Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially presented the staff of office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, marking the commencement of his reign as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

The event, held on Monday morning at the Exco Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, comes nearly three years after the passing of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III.

The presentation ceremony, though symbolic, carried significant weight as it legitimized the new monarch’s authority amidst lingering controversies over his selection. Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of the Alaafin’s stool, not just to Oyo Town or Oyo State, but to the entire Yoruba race.

He highlighted his administration’s commitment to transparency and neutrality in the selection process, stating, “Under my watch, I made it very clear that the stool would not be for sale. It is not a stool for us to toil with.”

Makinde disclosed that he met Oba Owoade for the first time a day before the ceremony to ensure that his opinions did not influence the selection process.

Reflecting on his administration’s approach to traditional institutions, the governor recounted challenges faced during his first term and stressed his resolve to separate governance from political considerations.

He also warned individuals attempting to destabilize the traditional institution, assuring that the government would prosecute such acts unless forgiven by the new Alaafin.

Governor Makinde expressed hope that Oba Owoade’s reign would usher in peace and progress for Oyoland, Oyo State, and the Yoruba race. He also announced that the coronation ceremony would take place in four weeks.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade pledged to prioritize the development of Oyo Town, Oyo State, and Nigeria while fostering unity among the people.

He extended gratitude to the governor, the Oyomesi, and all stakeholders involved in his selection process.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, commended Governor Makinde’s insistence on due process during the selection exercise.

The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal; former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu; and Awise Awo Agbaye, Professor Wande Abimbola, among others.
