Lagos Speaker Meranda Dismisses Resignation Rumours, Assembly Reaffirms Confidence In Leadership

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has dismissed speculation about her resignation, affirming that she remains in office despite circulating reports suggesting otherwise.

Rumours of Meranda’s resignation gained traction after an online report claimed she had stepped down. The speculation was further fueled by a circular dated February 17, 2025, allegedly issued by the speaker, which went viral on social media.

However, Segun Ajiboye, Meranda’s chief press secretary, debunked the claims on Wednesday, insisting that the speaker has not resigned.

“I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from,” Ajiboye told Arise News.

The uncertainty surrounding Meranda’s position heightened tensions at the assembly complex on Monday, prompting a heavy security presence. Police officers and task force personnel were stationed within and outside the premises amid reports that the speaker’s office had been sealed.

In a show of support, lawmakers moved to reaffirm their confidence in Meranda’s leadership. During plenary, Oladipo Ajomale, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, introduced a motion backing her, leading the assembly to pass a vote of confidence in her administration.
