A prominent member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Muraina Akanbi Taiwo, has firmly rejected any attempt to reinstate the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, insisting that democracy must take its course.

Taiwo, who is also a leader of The Mandate Movement, acknowledged the party’s loyalty to President Bola Tinubu but emphasized that Obasa’s removal was necessary for the good of the state.

“Loyalty to Mr. President, the cause, and the leadership of the party remains paramount, but democracy must take its course,” Taiwo stated in a statement on Wednesday.

He cited the Qur’an to reinforce his stance, noting that leadership is divinely granted and withdrawn.

He described Obasa’s impeachment as long overdue, attributing it to deep frustrations among lawmakers over his leadership style, which they claimed hindered their effectiveness.

“Having attended two meetings where members spoke openly and emotionally, I witnessed firsthand the weight of their grievances,” he said.

Taiwo added that while Obasa remains a formidable politician, the lawmakers’ decision reflected their commitment to good governance and the best interests of Lagos State.

Obasa was impeached by 32 out of 40 lawmakers on charges of gross misconduct and replaced by Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.
