Ibadan Lagelu Grammar School celebrated its 67th Founder’s Day on January 27, 2025, with a grand event held in the school hall.

The occasion drew a distinguished gathering of old students, including former commissioners, royal fathers, successful business leaders, academicians, and career professionals, along with their invited guests.

Honourable Kayode Afolabi, a former Commissioner during the administration of Oyo State’s ex-Governor Rashidi Ladoja, delivered a thought-provoking speech on the evolving standards of education.

Comparing the educational systems of the past and present, Afolabi highlighted the industrial-era qualities of older education, which he described as fostering greater concentration, commitment, and sincerity of purpose.

These attributes, he argued, made education in those days more impactful and effective.

In contrast, Afolabi noted that today’s education is characterized by the sophistication of the information age, with advancements in teaching methods, knowledge acquisition, and preservation.

While acknowledging the potential benefits of modern educational tools, he criticized the unwholesome practices of some parents and teachers who enable examination malpractices.

According to him, these shortcuts undermine students’ dedication to studying and have contributed to a culture of laziness and indolence.

Despite these challenges, Afolabi praised Nigerian universities that have demonstrated seriousness and commitment by developing robust syllabi and curricula.

He noted that these efforts have positioned some institutions among the top universities in Africa, bringing credibility and recognition to Nigeria on the global stage.
