Jonathan Mourns Yar’Adua Matriarch, Says Her Influence Shaped His Political Career

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Hajiya Dada Yar’Adua, describing her passing as a personal loss and acknowledging her significant role in shaping his political career.

Jonathan made these remarks on Saturday during a condolence visit to the Yar’Adua family in Katsina, following the demise of their matriarch.

Reflecting on her influence, he noted that it was through her son, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, that his political journey took a defining turn.

“This woman technically made me who I am,” Jonathan said.

He added, “Without her, you wouldn’t have known my name. It was her son who selected me as his running mate, and for that, I will always be grateful. She was like a mother to me, and this loss feels as profound as losing my own mother.”

Jonathan revealed that he was on his way to Kigali, Rwanda, when he received the news of her passing. Despite his international commitments, he made it a priority to return to Nigeria and pay his respects.

“I was in transit through Addis Ababa when our head of mission informed me of the sad news. Upon my return, I felt it was necessary to come to Katsina and offer my condolences in person. This is a sad moment for all of us,” he said.
