Johnny Depp will play Satan in Terry Gilliam’s new movie, The Carnival At The End Of Days. The film, described as an apocalyptic comedy, will also include characters like God and Adam and Eve.
This will be the second time Depp, 60, works with Gilliam, 83, after their collaboration on the 1998 movie Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
It’s also Depp’s second major film since his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard ended two years ago. His last role was as King Louis XV in the French movie Jeanne Du Barry, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
Gilliam, famous for his unique animation style used in Monty Python, explained to French film magazine Première that the movie is about God deciding to destroy humanity, and Satan trying to save people to keep his job in hell.
Jeff Bridges will play God, shown as “nature” brought to life with animation. The cast also includes Adam Driver and Jason Momoa, although their roles are still secret. Momoa is well-known for playing Aquaman.
Gilliam added that the movie will feature a modern Adam and Eve, and they are still casting the female lead. He mentioned that the film will be “very expensive” and “very funny for those who like to be offended.” Filming is set to start in January 2025.
This project comes after Depp’s high-profile legal battles, including winning a defamation case against Heard in 2022 and losing a libel case against The Sun in 2020.
