The first-year memorial anniversary of the late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Sen. Dr. Mahood Olalekan Balogun, was held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at his private palace in Alarere, Ibadan.
The event was a grand tribute to the revered monarch, drawing dignitaries, family members, traditional rulers, and well-wishers from all walks of life.
The Olubadan of Ibadan, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akinloye Olakuleyin, was represented by Gbonka Balogun Olubadan, Chief Monsur Abiola Arulogun. Religious leaders, led by the Chief Imam of Alarere, Alhaji AbdulRauf Ajisafe, offered special prayers for the late king’s soul and for the current Olubadan, asking for long life, good health, and wisdom to continue leading Ibadan successfully.
Aremo Femi Balogun, the first son of the late Olubadan, led the family in paying emotional tributes. Speaking on behalf of himself and in honor of his late revered father, he described Oba Balogun as a selfless and dedicated leader whose contributions to Ibadan would never be forgotten.
“The impact my father made in the lives of many will never be forgotten,” Aremo Balogun said. “I would like to make a heartfelt appeal to everyone here to continue to uphold his legacy. His vision for Ibadan and its people remains alive, and I will not disappoint those who believed in him.”
He also took the opportunity to express his deep appreciation to Mogaji Kamaldeen Giwa, the esteemed Mogaji-designate, and Agbaoye Kola Karim for their generous contributions toward the planned event commemorating their beloved father.
“This event holds great significance as it marks the exact day God called him home. Only He knows why our father passed during the fasting period last year, and it is our duty to honor his memory on this day for many years to come,” he said.
Aremo Balogun acknowledged the presence of Ibadan North East Local Government Chairman, Hon. Akintayo, who was represented at the gathering.
He also noted that the contributions from key supporters went a long way in ensuring the success of the preparations, for which he was deeply grateful.
As a mark of honor, a large bill flex display was set up at the event, allowing attendees—both high-ranking dignitaries and ordinary citizens—to sign their autographs in memory of the late Olubadan. The display became a symbol of the deep respect and admiration people had for the late monarch, with heartfelt messages written by guests.
The occasion was not just a solemn gathering but also a celebration of a remarkable life. Guests were entertained with rich music that reflected Ibadan’s cultural heritage. A lavish reception followed, where attendees were served a variety of local and continental delicacies.
Aremo Balogun further announced that the memorial event would now be held annually, reaffirming the family’s commitment to keeping the legacy of the late Olubadan alive.
“Thank you all, and may we continue to uphold the legacy of our great father,” he concluded.
