Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has maintained that the 1999 Constitution (as Amended) does not allow for tenure extension of elected local government chairmen.
Addressing journalists after a security council meeting with heads of security agencies in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara explained that the meeting was convened due to emerging threats to state peace related to the expiration of local government chairmen’s terms.
“We will fearlessly lead the way to ensure peace prevails in the state while protecting patriotic supporters who stand for the truth. The law on local government tenure is clear and has been affirmed by the court. There is no provision for extending the tenure,” he stated.
Governor Fubara also vowed to protect his supporters and resist any plans to arrest them.
He expressed gratitude to the media and the people of Rivers State for their support, urging everyone to remain law-abiding for the state’s unity and progress.
In a state broadcast on Tuesday from Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara directed heads of administration in the 23 local government areas to take over from the outgoing council chairmen whose three-year terms ended on Monday.
He stated that this decision aligns with the constitution and is necessary to maintain peace and order in the state.
He also commended the council chairmen for their dedication and service.
