The Football Association (FA) has appointed Thomas Tuchel as England’s new manager, with the German set to take charge on January 1, 2025.
The 51-year-old, who most recently managed Bayern Munich, is tasked with guiding the national team to their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.
Tuchel, renowned for his trophy-laden career, succeeds Gareth Southgate, becoming the third foreign coach in England’s history, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
His appointment comes after Southgate resigned in July following a Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, concluding an eight-year tenure that saw England rise to prominence on the international stage.
Having previously led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021 and managing top European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, Tuchel is seen as the FA’s choice to finally end the nation’s 58-year wait for a major tournament win. He brings with him a wealth of experience, including league titles with PSG and Bayern Munich.
However, his appointment has sparked controversy, with some criticizing the FA’s decision not to hire an Englishman for the top job, especially given the current pool of talented players such as Jude Bellingham, who are seen as contenders for the 2026 World Cup.
“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team,” Tuchel said in a statement.
He added, “To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
Tuchel’s tenure will run through the 2026 World Cup, with English coach Anthony Barry serving as his assistant, continuing a partnership formed during their time at Bayern.
England captain Harry Kane, who played under Tuchel at Bayern, praised the appointment, describing him as a “fantastic coach” and “fantastic person.”
The FA’s CEO, Mark Bullingham, expressed confidence in Tuchel’s ability to lead England, citing his impressive track record and leadership qualities. “Thomas stood out with his vast expertise and drive,” Bullingham said.
Tuchel and Bullingham are expected to address the media at Wembley later today.
