Ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, political parties and their candidates signed a Peace Accord to ensure a peaceful process.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party, and other smaller parties participated in the signing. However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, refused to sign the accord.
According to former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who chaired the event, the PDP raised concerns about the neutrality of security forces, citing recent arrests of its members.
Governor Godwin Obaseki accused the police of favoring the APC, stating that the PDP would not commit to the Peace Accord unless their conditions were met.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed that Edo State now has over 2.6 million registered voters.
