Justice Hamza Muazu of a federal high court, sitting in federal capital territory (FCT) has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately release the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), or charge him to court.
Emefiele has been in custody of the secret police since last month. He was arrested the following day, President Bola Tinubu suspended him on June 9, and ordered a probe of the apex bank.
Before his arrest, the DSS has disclosed that it is investigating him over an allegations of sponsoring terrorism and financial crime.
Delivering judgement on an application by Joseph Daudu, counsel to Emefiele, Justice Muazu gave the DSS one week to either charge Emefiele to court if they have criminal allegations against him or release him on bail.
Since his suspension, Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, deputy governor, operations directorate has been taking charge of the apex bank.
