The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a timeless example of moral courage whose life continues to inspire hope for peaceful coexistence across religious divides.
In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the late cleric’s legacy goes beyond a single heroic act, representing a powerful reminder that true faith upholds the sanctity of human life above all differences.
Imam Abdullahi earned national and international admiration in 2018 when he shielded hundreds of Christians during a deadly attack in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State.
By risking his own life to protect others, CAN noted, the Imam demonstrated uncommon bravery and a deep commitment to shared humanity at a time of extreme danger.
According to CAN, the Imam’s intervention, which reportedly saved 262 lives, remains one of the most profound examples of interfaith solidarity in Nigeria’s recent history.
The association said his actions helped strengthen trust between communities and reinforced the belief that religion can be a force for peace rather than division.
Archbishop Okoh stated that the cleric’s courage not only prevented a greater tragedy but also left an enduring lesson for religious leaders and followers alike.
He noted that in recognition of this selfless service to humanity, CAN honoured Imam Abdullahi during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021.
CAN stressed that while the award symbolised national appreciation, the true value of the Imam’s sacrifice lies in the lasting impact of his example.
The association called for sustained efforts to preserve and promote his story, including meaningful engagement with his family, so that future generations may draw inspiration from his life.
As CAN mourned the passing of the revered Imam, it urged Nigerians to reflect on his legacy as a call to unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. The association also extended condolences to his family, community and all those touched by his exceptional life of service to God and humanity.
