In the aftermath of a tragic incident at Obada Grammar School, the father of a student who died has called on the government to take stricter measures to ensure school safety and teacher accountability.
Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Mr Gbeminiyi Arijo, father of the late Ogun SS 2 student who died recently after allegedly receiving 40 strokes of cane and doing about 150 frog jumps, stated that the school’s teachers had reportedly been consuming alcohol before lessons, creating an environment he described as “irresponsible and dangerous.”
He urged authorities to address this issue and to intensify monitoring of teachers to prevent future tragedies.
While expressing his grief, the parent clarified that he had discouraged any form of retaliation or attack on the school, instead appealing for the institution to reopen so students could continue their education.
However, he expressed frustration that only one teacher had been arrested, though students alleged that multiple staff members were involved.
He urged the government to bring all those implicated to justice, emphasizing the need for stronger oversight to protect students from harm.
