Abubakar Atiku, the main opposition figure has cautioned the service chiefs against unleashing terror on peaceful protesters.
In a stern warning to the “distinguished” service chiefs and military commanders of Nigeria’s armed forces, the former vice president stated in his X handle that the issue of accountability for authorising lethal force against peaceful civilian protesters has been brought to the forefront.
He said the individuals who approve such actions will be held responsible for committing crimes against humanity, extending even into their retirement years.
Mr Abubakar highlighted the constitutional right to engage in peaceful protest, a right firmly established within Nigeria’s supreme law and reinforced by the judiciary.
According to him, the government and security agencies have a solemn duty to ensure a safe and protected environment for individuals exercising this right.
“Any deviation from this duty, particularly involving the use of lethal force, would not be tolerated and would lead to severe consequences,” he warned.
