Atiku Rallies Forces Against Tinubu’s Government

Advertisment

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has intensified moves to galvanize opposition forces against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, warning that Nigeria’s democracy faces grave threats.

Atiku, who has been holding high-level consultations with political allies and former government officials, met separately on Sunday with Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, representing Sokoto South, and former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

The meetings, according to sources close to the opposition camp, were part of broader efforts to consolidate a new coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the former Vice President accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fostering “anti-democratic practices,” insisting that Nigerians must be protected from what he called an “emerging dictatorship.”

“We will be unrelenting in defending the rights of every Nigerian being harassed by anti-democratic forces of the Tinubu-led APC administration. That was my assurance to Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, today,” Atiku wrote.

He explained that the coalition is not merely a gathering of opposition politicians but a deliberate alliance of political actors, disgruntled APC stakeholders, and civil society groups determined to preserve Nigeria’s democratic values.

“The coalition that we are pushing is aimed at rescuing our democracy from the stranglehold of this emerging dictatorship. We shall be deliberate in joining hands in saving our democracy,” he stressed.

Although the detailed framework of the coalition has not been made public, opposition insiders confirmed it would involve a broad spectrum of political players, including PDP loyalists, ADC members, and other groups dissatisfied with the APC-led government.

Atiku’s renewed push for opposition unity comes at a time of mounting political tension in the country, with critics accusing the Tinubu administration of centralizing power and stifling dissent.
