The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Federal Polytechnic Nekede chapter (ASUPNek) has publicly distanced itself from the two-week warning strike declared by the national leadership of ASUP, which commenced on Monday, December 2, 2024.
According to ASUPNek, the strike action is perceived as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the progress of their institution and undermine the leadership of Dr. Basilia Igbokwe, recently appointed as the 9th substantive Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri (FPNO).
During a press conference held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, ASUPNek, alongside representatives of various unions on campus, openly declared their support for Dr. Igbokwe. The event, which included a peaceful solidarity demonstration on campus, was chaired by past ASUPNek leaders and supported by union heads from groups such as FEPNOWA, WITED, FAWEN, the Alumni Association, and others.
A press statement titled “In Response to the Activities of the National Leadership of ASUP Against the Selection and Appointment of Dr. Basilia Igbokwe as Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede” was presented during the event.
Allegations Against National ASUP Leadership
The press statement, signed by notable stakeholders including Dr. Anayo C. Uhiara (representing past ASUPNek Chairmen), Comr. Maxwell Obijuru (NOTSUP Chairman), Comr. Akinduru Francis (SSANIP Chairman), and others, accused the national leadership of ASUP, led by Comrade Shamma Kpanja and immediate past President Comrade Anderson Ezeibe, of writing a petition challenging the appointment of Dr. Igbokwe.
This move, according to ASUPNek, led to a “vote of no confidence” in their chapter chairman, Engr. Nwadike Stanley, and the subsequent suspension of the ASUPNek executive council for allegedly aligning with the national body against the institution’s interests.
The statement also highlighted that during ASUPNek’s 3rd Quarter Congress held on October 30, 2024, the congress unanimously resolved to suspend Engr. Stanley for failing to consult with the chapter before collaborating with the national body to oppose the Rector’s appointment. Furthermore, the congress voted to disassociate ASUPNek from the national strike, describing it as self-serving and detrimental to the institution.

The ASUPNek Solidarity Complex, previously named after Comrade Anderson Ezeibe, was renamed and locked to protect union property.
Deductions of check-off dues from members’ salaries were suspended.
All transactions in the union’s accounts were halted pending conflict resolution.
Support for Dr. Basilia Igbokwe
ASUPNek members praised Dr. Igbokwe’s leadership, describing her appointment as a divine blessing. They lauded her for implementing significant improvements in less than three months, particularly in staff and student welfare and infrastructural development.
“We have witnessed remarkable positive changes under Dr. Igbokwe’s leadership,” the statement read.
“Her appointment is a prayer answered by God. She has prioritized the welfare of staff and students and initiated improvements across the institution.”
In their closing remarks, the ASUPNek community urged the Minister of Education to dismiss the petition filed by the ASUP national leadership. They reaffirmed their unwavering support for Dr. Igbokwe, vowing to work with her to restore the institution’s glory.
“Our resolve is to rescue, recover, reconstruct, and restore the dignity of our dear institution. We stand firmly behind Dr. Igbokwe and her administration,” they declared.
The Rector, Dr. Basilia Igbokwe, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. She reaffirmed her commitment to fulfilling her 11-point agenda, emphasizing her dedication to the institution’s progress.
