AI Demands ICC Trial For Kenyan President Ruto Over Protesters’ Massacre

Amnesty International has called for President William Ruto of Kenya to be tried at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for overseeing the massacre of peaceful protesters.

According to Amnesty, Ruto’s administration planned and executed violence against citizens protesting the punitive 2024 Finance Bill.

Amnesty International organization reported that Kenyan police killed 23 people, injured 300, and abducted 22 during the protests.

In a statement on Wednesday, the international organisation condemned Ruto’s actions, stating, “These shootings, killings, and abductions constitute crimes against humanity, making Kenya’s President Ruto a candidate for the International Criminal Court.”

It also slammed Ruto for labeling the protests as treasonous and deploying the military illegally, which further fueled the violence.

Amnesty International accused Ruto of inciting violence through a broadcast that described the protests as “treasonous events” and thanked security officers for their actions.

It noted that shortly after this broadcast, the Kenyan Defence Forces were deployed to support the police, exacerbating the situation.

The protests, initially peaceful, turned bloody when police used live ammunition on demonstrators in Nairobi.

Despite withdrawing the controversial Finance Bill on Wednesday, Ruto’s actions have led to calls for a mass march to shut down the country.

The international community, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Belgium, has expressed concern over the government’s violent response to the protests.

Ruto’s imposition of taxes since taking office in 2022 has been a contentious issue, with the Finance Bill sparking widespread protests across Kenya.

  1. I am wondering where the AI was when several young Nigerians were said to have been gruesomely murdered during their peaceful protest at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos Nigeria.

Is this a case of what’s good for the Goose not being good for the Gander? I like to know.
