Afia-Sponsored Team Shines As Afeniforo Leads Oyo To 30-Medal Triumph At African Armwrestling Championship

In a historic outing at the 14th African Armwrestling Championship held at the M.K.O. Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Team Oyo, proudly sponsored by Afia Group, delivered a dominant performance that firmly established Nigeria’s presence on the continental stage of the sport.

Representing Nigeria, the Oyo State Armwrestling Team clinched a remarkable 30 medals, comprising nine gold, nine silver, and twelve bronze  across various left-hand and right-hand categories, marking one of the country’s strongest showings at the competition.

Leading the charge was Adefunke Afeniforo, who stunned spectators and made history by dethroning the long-reigning African champion, Olaleye Marie of Benin Republic, in the women’s 65kg category. Marie, a two-time gold medalist at the last African Games, had held an unbeaten record for years — until Afeniforo’s emergence.

Afeniforo, who only began her armwrestling journey in April 2025, turned heads in Abuja as she became the first Oyo athlete to clinch senior gold in the championship’s history. She claimed three gold medals and one silver, becoming the standout performer of the tournament.

“I still can’t believe this happened,” said an emotional Afeniforo. “I knew I was facing a legend. I respect Olaleye deeply, but I came here to prove that no dream is too small, and no champion is unbeatable. This win is for everyone who never gave up.”

Other notable contributors to Oyo’s gold medal haul included Lara Adegoke and Daniel Olaniyan, who secured two gold medals each, while Daramola Babatunde and Mamud Aminu added one apiece.

On the silver podium, Afeniforo was joined by athletes such as Shola Salami, who earned one silver; Daramola Babatunde and Mimo Olabode, with two each; and Bashir Waliyulha and Mamud Aminu, who both clinched one silver medal. The bronze medals were won through the efforts of athletes like Tomiwa Johnson (2), Adekunyo Ojo (1), Reuben Onyebuchi (1), Gerald Olurunfonsho (2), Shola Salami (1), Wojoula Olasupo (2), Bashir Waliyulha (1), and Tajudeen Balogun (2), reflecting the team’s depth and collective strength.

The team’s exceptional performance was the result of months of hard work, guided by Coach Ilesanmi Osideko, Assistant Coach Alabi Olasunkanmi, Secretary Olaleye Akintunde, and Helper Olaseni Abiodun. Their roles were instrumental in preparing the athletes both physically and mentally for the continental challenge.

Coach Osideko, speaking on behalf of the delegation, extended heartfelt appreciation to Afia Group for their unwavering support, which made it possible for the team to prepare adequately at the Team Nigeria training camp and participate successfully in the championship.

Engr. Abduljelyl Adekunle Karheem MCIArb, MCIOB, МСАВЕ — Mogaji Adanla and CEO of Afia Homes & Properties  commended the athletes’ discipline and resilience.

“This, indeed, is a well-deserved victory for Oyo State, and another plus for the people’s governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde,” he remarked.
