A former Minister of Communications and governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Adebayo Shittu, has declared that he remains the most experienced contender within the party’s ranks ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.
Shittu, who spoke during an interview with journalists at his Ibadan office, expressed strong optimism about his chances of clinching the APC ticket and ultimately winning the governorship poll if given the opportunity.
“If I am given the ticket, I will win. But it is not for me to decide; it is God who decides. I am making my efforts and praying, and I believe God will answer my prayers,” he stated.
‘I Have the Widest Political Experience’
Speaking on his efforts to secure the party’s nomination, Shittu described himself as a long-standing advocate for the people of Oyo State with decades of political and administrative experience.
He recalled that his political journey began at a young age when he was elected into the State House of Assembly at 23. According to him, he later served as a Commissioner and Attorney-General at the state level before rising to become Minister of Communications at the federal level.
“I became a member of the State House of Assembly at the age of 23. I have worked as a state commissioner and Attorney-General, and also served as Minister of Communications. Out of the eleven standing aspirants, I am the most experienced — even in terms of age,” he said.
Seven Cardinal Programmes
Outlining his development blueprint for Oyo State, Shittu unveiled what he described as seven cardinal programmes he intends to pursue if elected governor in 2027.
The proposed policy thrusts include: Free, quality and functional education at all levels; Comprehensive healthcare and medical reforms; Integrated infrastructural development; Full and gainful employment opportunities; Economic revitalisation initiatives; Social welfare expansion and Strengthened governance and institutional reforms
Shittu described himself as a product of the political ideology of Obafemi Awolowo, noting that while the late sage introduced four cardinal programmes during his time, he has expanded the vision to seven in response to present-day realities.
According to him, his agenda is rooted in progressive governance and people-oriented policies aimed at lifting Oyo State to greater economic and social heights.
With the 2027 governorship race gradually taking shape within the APC, Shittu’s declaration adds to the growing contest for the party’s ticket in what is expected to be a keenly fought primary.
