Chief Ifagbade Amosun, the leader of Orunmila Atayero at Osu Eleni Temple in Aba Isale, Egbeda Local Government, described the Ifa/Egungun Festival as a cultural and traditional expression of gratitude to God.
In an interview during the World Egungun Day held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo State, Amosun explained that the festival is organized to give thanks for the gift of life and to pray for the opportunity to witness future celebrations.
He noted that the event, observed periodically, brings together different generations to celebrate and strengthen their bonds.
“Through tradition (Isese) and culture (Asa), the Yoruba people have preserved their unique way of life, which is reflected in the teachings of the Ifa oracle,” he stated.
Amosun highlighted that the complexity of tradition and culture often leads to misunderstandings, but emphasized that these elements help the Yoruba people understand their origins and develop unique skills and knowledge.
This uniqueness is what defines their cultural existence.
Chief Ifagbade also expressed his gratitude to the Oyo State Government and Governor Seyi Makinde for hosting the World Egungun Day.
He called for regular cultural exhibitions to help the youth understand and appreciate their heritage, fostering a deeper interest in preserving and promoting their culture.
